Oneida County Executive Ralph J. Eannace Jr. and Oneida County Veterans Services officials joined Notre Dame High School’s NJROTC students today in a special celebration of Memorial Day.

Those in attendance placed American flags, purchased by Oneida County, on the graves of Veterans buried at Calvary Cemetery at 2407 Oneida Street in the City of Utica.

Four years ago Eannace envisioned providing the county's deceased veterans with their gravesite flags for the annual Memorial Day Observance. With the approval of the Board of Legislators and their funding for the project, the county reimbursed the local cities, towns and villages for their purchases of the flags.

However, the price for each flag varied from $.75 to over $1.00 depending on the supplier and the amount of flags purchased. The county’s investigation into pricing showed that we could purchase the flags centrally and have the supplier distribute the flags to each location at a substantial savings as compared to the individual purchases in the past.

This year the county has purchased more than 25,000 flags at approximately .53 cents each.
