EANNACE ANNOUNCES REQUEST FOR HEALTH INITIATIVES

County Executive Ralph J. Eannace, Jr. is pleased to announce request for proposals (RFP) for health initiatives to address Oneida County’s public health priorities. The County Executive and Oneida County Legislature are making available a total of $100,000 for "Health Initiatives".

County Executive Eannace is seeking innovative and creative proposals to address the primary causes of undesirable health outcomes with a focus on prevention. "Improving the public health of Oneida County’s communities is essential for our county’s future. Health Initiatives projects will encourage community-wide collaborations with grass roots efforts in the spirit of Communities That Care," Eannace said. The awards will be a minimum of $1,500 up to a maximum of $10,000. Health Initiative projects may be new projects or enhancement of existing projects. The project term is May 1, 2001 through December 31, 2001. A limited number of larger awards may be considered.

County Executive Eannace said, "The goal of the "Health Initiatives" funding is to focus community attention and to stimulate coordinated action in specific areas that can lead to the most significant improvement in functional life span of county residents. In collaboration with the Oneida County Health Coalition, County Executive Eannace has identified six categorical priorities and respective goals for which grant funding will be considered.

Dental Health Care Access and Delivery – Goal: To improve access to acute and preventive health care for children under 4 years of age and other individuals who are uninsured or underinsured.

Needs of the Elder Population – Goal: To improve service access for elderly in their home settings with particular attention to issues such as isolation, nutrition, abuse, medical care, medications, safety and transportation.

Strengthen families and improve the quality of life for children – Goal: To enhance the quality of life for children and strengthen families by addressing issues such as those identified in the Teen Assessment Program Survey (TAP) or other data sources through prevention activities which affect underlying causes for public health concern.

Nutritional Status – Goal: To assist adults and/or children to acquire knowledge and skills which result in changing behaviors and improving the nutritional status of individuals.

Tobacco, Alcohol and Substance Use – Goal: To reduce disease, disability and death related to the use of tobacco, alcohol and/or substance among adults and/or children.

Respiratory Disease – Goal: To reduce respiratory disease by improving indoor air quality or other means directly affecting cause of disease.

The deadline for applications is Monday, April 2, 2001, 2:00 P. M. Awards are expected to be announced on Monday, April 16, 2001.
