Griffo: Oneida County Plans to Participate in
Next Two Sales Tax-Free Weeks

Oneida County Executive Joseph A. Griffo today announced that he is asking the Oneida County Board of Legislators to approve the return of sales tax-free shopping to Oneida County during sales tax-free shopping weeks in late August and next January.

“I made a commitment when the county increased the sales tax that we would participate in every sales tax free week that is offered by the state,” Griffo said. “We will continue to do so. The traditional back-to-school tax-free period allows families to stretch their shopping dollars farther or to buy ahead as children grow and back-to-school items become worn. This is also a time when seniors and others on tight budgets can plan ahead to buy clothing items under $100 and take full advantage of tax-free shopping.”

Griffo said the two dates for the tax-free weeks are August 30, 2005-September 5, 2005 and January 30, 2020 to February 5, 2006. Griffo noted that Oneida County participated in this past January’s tax-free week also.

In line with the county’s regulations, Griffo has requested the Board of Legislators act to formally approve the county’s participation in the two weeks.

Griffo encouraged shoppers to visit locally owned stores.

“Whether we are talking about a tax-free week or any other time of year, I encourage shoppers to support local retailers who offer high-quality products and a level of customer service that is often hard to find these days,” he said. “Supporting local merchants strengthens our community and also maintains a rich array of shopping options for consumers.”

Griffo noted that clothing and footwear items priced below $110 are exempt from taxation. He said the county’s action covers the county share of the sales tax, but not the share imposed by local cities.
